Akhenaten and Moses: Origin and Consequences of Monotheism
Pharaoh Akhenaten gave birth to monotheistic Atenism around 1350 BCE. Many believe that less than a century later, the proto-Israelite Moses led the beginnings of a second monotheism that ultimately evolved into Judaism, Christianity and Islam. Over the centuries, monotheism evolved distinguishing (and disturbing) features that endure to today. How did monotheism develop? What’s the connection between Akhenaten and Moses? What critically important components of faith did Israelite monotheism and its successors reject, and what were the consequences? Our session will dig deep to find answers.
